Infinity symbol with script on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a small infinity symbol tattooed on the side of a torso, with a line of cursive script running through its centre. The black linework is thin and precise, with small white star sparkles placed along the loops. Soft pink, purple and blue washes sit behind the outline, giving a loose, cosmic effect against the skin.

The painter reaches the field before the rides do, which is how you know she means it. You sit on the back step of the caravan with a tin of ochre and a brush gone stiff, trying to get the lettering right on the board above the Figure Eight. Nessa wants her name in looping cursive, the way a letter might look if it were written by someone in no hurry at all. Your hand keeps closing the loops too early.

The fair has sat in the same muddy corner of Lincolnshire for nine days. Each night the generator coughs, the lights come on in a rush of colour, and the big wheel throws its reflection across the puddles like a dropped handful of coins. You paint at dusk while the light holds. Nessa brings you tea in a jam jar and says the old wiring on the Eight will need replacing, that it will still be standing when the next town takes it, if the next town is not too fussy.
On the last night, when the carousel has gone quiet, you climb the scaffold with a pot of pearly white and a fine rigger brush. You dot tiny stars along the loops, the way the sky shows through the gaps in the ride's canvas roof. Nessa watches from below, arms folded against the cold. The paint sets on the iron in a minute. By morning the lorries have gone and only a ring of flattened grass remains, and the sign still reads the way she asked, two loops running into each other with the name cut through the middle, going round and round.
