A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jay came down to the well at Harrow Fold every morning, when the sky was still the colour of wet slate, and every morning Mab Ostler tipped her bucket to let it drink. It was a bird that had no business being so bold. Its crest stood up like a wave cresting, and its feathers were the blue of the sea in the autumn. But the old people said that when it turned its head you could see, deep in the belly of it, the dark of the night sky with the stars strewn through, pink and violet clouds, the far lights that the shepherds named and forgot.

One winter the well froze solid and the village went hungry. Mab had nothing to spare, only a crust and a cup of thin milk, and she set it on the wall for the bird out of habit more than hope. The jay did not eat. It hopped along the frosted branch of the hawthorn, looked at her with one black eye, and then flew straight up into the grey until she lost it. When spring came it returned, and it had a sprig of something silver tucked under one wing, a little light that shivered when it moved.

She planted the seed where the bird had dropped it. By midsummer there was a tree at the edge of the field, and its leaves threw small points of light onto the grass at dusk, as if the sky had come down to rest. Mab never went hungry again, and when she was old the village children said that if you sat under the tree long enough, a blue jay would land on the branch above you and sparkle like the night itself.
