Galaxy cat silhouette on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cat silhouette in a stretched, arched pose with its tail curling upwards. The body is filled with a night-sky pattern of blue, violet, pink and teal shading, with scattered white dots and four-point star sparkles. The solid outline and smooth gradients give it a soft, painterly look, and the design sits diagonally across the forearm against a plain tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat arrived at Seaview House the week the damp came through the back bedroom, and Mrs Pardoe swore she had never let him in. He was a long dark shape with his tail hooked up like a question mark, and when I came down to the hall at five in the morning, smelling of diesel and herring, he was already sitting on the newel post as if he had been waiting for a tenant with a key.

I worked nights at the fish market on the harbour wall, which meant I slept through the afternoons with the curtains pulled and the gulls shouting along the guttering. The cat never woke me. He arranged himself on the radiator at the foot of my bed, and somewhere near four he would stand, stretch the whole length of himself until his spine clicked, and the room would fill with blue and violet light, pricked all over with small white stars.

Mr Pardoe's old charts were rolled in a biscuit tin in the attic. I took them down one wet Sunday and laid them across the landing boards, and there, between Cassiopeia and a faded lamp of Lyra, was the cat, every bright point where his shoulder would be. Mrs Pardoe came up with a tea tray, looked at the paper for a long while, and said her husband had always called that one the Lodger, because it never paid rent.

On my last morning the cat walked me to the gate and sat on the wet step, his tail curled up in the grey light. The stars were still on him even with the sun up, only quieter, the way a thing keeps its shape after you stop looking straight at it.
