Forearm tattoo of black shaded wolves running across turquoise geometric shards, in a geometric style, shown in two photos.

Running wolves and shards on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows several dark wolf silhouettes running across the forearm, with soft airbrush-like shading that fades at their edges. Behind them, flat turquoise areas and angular pale and purple shards break the skin into geometric planes. The top photo shows the outer forearm and the lower photo a closer view of the same piece, with the shapes continuing around the arm.

The wolves came down Harrow Lane the night the ninth floor windows went, and nobody in Calder House heard the glass because the telly in 4C was turned up for the football. Mrs Okafor saw them first from the bin store, four of them, then five, running low along the kerb with their heads level and their tails out straight. They didn't look at her. They ran as if the estate were a river they had to cross before the tide turned.

Her grandmother had kept stories about grey dogs that ran when a building was owed something, and Mrs Okafor told anyone on the stairs. Sanjay from the lift said it was wind through the broken pane and the council would sort it by Christmas. By the second week the children were drawing wolves on the lift mirror in lipstick, and the caretaker had stopped scrubbing them off.

Tomasz went up on the eleventh night with a torch and his brother's skateboard helmet, because he was nine and wanted to be the one who saw. On the ninth floor the broken glass lay in the corridor in pale and purple shards, sharp as sails, and between them were paw prints the colour of car park puddles, turquoise under the torch. He followed them to the stairwell window. The wolves were out on the tarmac below, stopping at the edge of the flats, lifting the shards one by one in their teeth and carrying them off over the fence.

By morning the ninth floor had no glass left to break. Mrs Okafor swept the corridor anyway and found one sliver of blue under the mat, which she kept on the windowsill of 4C so the sky came through it. Tomasz said the wolves were taking the building apart to build something somewhere else, and his mum told him to eat his cereal.
