Thigh · Colour · Photo

A blue seahorse with a curled purple tail sits on the outer thigh, with its body shaded in teal, blue and violet. Small white and purple star sparkles are scattered across its body, giving a night sky feel. The bold, smooth colour fills and simple shapes are set against plain grey wall and dark shorts.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamps were being lit along the quay when Maud Tregarth found the seahorse caught in her father's mooring rope, its tail wound three times round the iron ring and its colour already draining out of it like a tide going off the sand.

She cut it free with her knife and carried it in cupped hands to the harbour steps, but it would not swim. It hung over her palm, pale at the cheeks, until the first star came up behind the breakwater and a speck of light climbed its flank and stayed there. Old Hobb the net-mender said the sea keeps a sky of its own beneath the water, and whatever you take from it you must give back a little of the night.

So she kept it in a bucket by the fish house through the dark, and each evening she set it on the quay to catch what the sky let fall. Every night the light on its body grew, violet at the tail where the sea runs deepest, white at the crown. By midwinter the harbour boys came to look, the boats came in heavy, and the nets rose full of a silver nobody in Pell Cove could name.

When the spring tides came round, the seahorse was bright enough to swim. Maud walked it down the steps at the turn of the water and set it in the green, and it turned once, slowly, its curled tail lifting, and went down towards the deep where the sky waited. The next night the stars over the cove hung thick as salt, and the fishermen said the sea had its sky back.
