Galaxy revealed through torn skin on a back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A torn-skin effect opens to reveal a night sky filled with small white stars, deep blue and violet clouds and a glowing orange core. The torn edges are shaded with soft highlights and shadows to look raised and three-dimensional. The colour is rich and blended, and the design fills the centre of the frame against a skin-toned background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ovens at Dunmore Street had been ticking since half three, and Hana had the first tray of tins scored before the wall clock reached four. She worked with a razor blade held between two fingers, a quick flick at a slant, the way her uncle Tomasz had shown her when she was fifteen and too proud to ask. Each cut had to go deep enough to let the dough open where she wanted it, or the loaf would split wherever it pleased, and she had lost enough bakes that way to respect the blade.

In the oven the cuts began to lift. The crust tore along the lines she had drawn, peeled back in pale flaps and browned at the edges, and a seam of light opened in the middle of each loaf as the dough pushed outward. She kept the oven door cracked a finger's width so she could watch the centres turn from grey to gold. Tomasz used to say you did not bake bread so much as let it break open on purpose.

Kieran, the new delivery lad, came through the back with the empty crates and stopped at the yard door. He asked why she never looked up when she carried the rubbish out, and she said the sky at that hour was too much to be looking at with flour on your hands. He stepped out anyway. Above the car park the dark had thinned to deep violet, and a few stars still hung on, sharp and small, like the flecks in a crumb.

When the last tray came out she tore the first loaf in half while it was still too hot to hold. Steam rose in a soft column, and the inside was dark and pocked with air, speckled with tiny pale holes all the way through. She handed Kieran the heel without a word. "Mind, it's hot," she said, and he laughed and held it anyway, looking up through the open door at the sky going pale.
