Howling werewolf under a moon
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A werewolf stands upright with its head thrown back in a howl, set against a large pale moon and dark, smoky tree shapes. The linework is soft and the shading is detailed, with smooth tonal gradients across the fur, muscular torso and clawed hands. The composition fills the limb, with the moon forming a halo behind the figure and dark foliage framing the edges in greys and black.

The moon had hung full over Harrowdene for nine nights, and on the tenth Wilm the tanner's son put down his awl, wiped his hands on his apron, and walked out past the last hedge toward the black pines. His mother called after him. The dogs would not follow. Nobody in the valley needed telling what the pines kept.

Beyond the trees he found a clearing where the grass was grey with frost, and a man stood with his back to the moon. He was tall and bare to the waist, and his head was a wolf's head, thrown back, jaws open to the sky. The howl that came out of him was not loud. It was old, and it rose like smoke, and the moon seemed to lean down to catch it.
"Who taught you to cry at me?" the wolf-man asked, without turning. Wilm said his grandmother had. The wolf-man laughed, a sound like a door on a bad hinge, and said that was the trouble with Harrowdene: everyone learned the howl and nobody learned the answer. He held out a clawed hand. In it lay a pale stone the size of a hen's egg, and inside the stone was a small full moon.
Wilm took it and carried it home. In the morning he could not remember his mother's name, only the name of the moon, which he now howled every night from the hedge. The village still leaves a heel of bread at the last hedge for whoever comes walking out. The stone sits in the tanner's window, and each month it grows a little fuller.
