Game controller tattoos on palms
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two open palms are shown facing the camera, each carrying a black outlined game controller design. The left palm has a d-pad and small buttons, while the right has a round button cluster, and a small hooked-arm motif sits between them. The linework is bold with solid black fills, and the composition is centred and symmetrical, with lettering on the fingers and colour ink visible at the wrists.

The Sandgate Amusements shut its shutters at eleven, but the cabinet at the far end of the back room was never switched off, because Gwen Pryor had told the electrician that the Sea Serpent machine kept its own hours. Every night the screen flickered through its attract mode while the mop bucket dried by the fire door, and every night the two chairs in front of it sat empty.

Then in August a lad came in off the prom with his hands in his jacket pockets and asked for change for a pound coin he didn't have. Gwen gave him four ten-pence pieces anyway. He played Sea Serpent until the sun came up over the ferry terminal, thumbs bruised, the round buttons on his pad worn down to bright grey, and he never once looked at the high score board. He watched only the screen, where a small dark boat kept sliding off the bottom edge.
On the last morning he left the second pad on the chair beside him, pushed in neat as a cup on a saucer, and said, "Keep it warm for whoever's next." Gwen didn't understand until she went to switch the cabinet off and found the boat steered, for the first time in eleven years, safely into the lighthouse at the top of the reef, where its little light blinked twice and stayed on.
