Four cartoon faces of video game characters sit side by side in vertical rectangular panels with black outlines, on the outer forearm. The panels are evenly spaced and run across the forearm, with the outer two partly cropped at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pub's hoarding had sagged since February, and Terry Oakes wanted it repainted before the quiz crowd arrived, so he sent his niece Priya up the ladder with a tin of primer and a list of demands. Four panels, he said, like the strip in the Sunday paper, and the faces had to be the ones the regulars knew. She didn't know them. She only knew that his grandson had cried over one of them on Tuesday.

Priya sketched the first face in pencil on the back of a delivery note: a plumber with a moustache and a red cap, eyes wide, mid-shout, as if he'd dropped a spanner on his foot. Terry said that was the one. The second was his brother, longer in the jaw, green cap, always a step behind, and she gave him a looser mouth to match. The third was the horned king who kept stealing every scene, all teeth and orange spikes. Terry grumbled that he'd always been the best value on the sign.

The fourth panel was trouble. The figure at the far edge had to be half lost behind the brickwork, so she drew only a scowl and one ear. Terry asked why she'd left him looking so cross. She said a strip only works if somebody is always at the edge of the frame, waiting to see what the others do next.

On the last evening the paint was dry and the regulars gathered under the new sign. The boy who had cried pointed at the red cap and shouted the old jingle, and the whole bar joined in, badly. Terry sent a pint up the ladder with a pickled egg balanced on the rim. Priya drank it standing on the top rung, looking at the four faces she had made, and decided the sign had come out better than the delivery note ever deserved.
