Two smiley faces hugging on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two simple smiley faces with tiny arms are tattooed on the sides of two adjacent fingers, with the arms reaching across to meet in a hug. The linework is thin and black, with no shading. A plain silver ring is worn on the finger to the right, and the background is a wooden floor and a white surface.

The two thimble-sized ferrymen had shared a bench on the Lantern Canal for longer than anyone in Mossbrook could remember, and they had never once touched. Their boat was a walnut shell, their oars were bent pins, and every morning they rowed out to the same buoy and sat facing each other with their small black eyes shut tight. The lock-keeper's daughter, Ilse, thought it a shame. She brought them a cup of barley tea each Friday and left it on the gunwale without a word.

In the third week of autumn the canal froze at the edges, and the ferrymen stopped rowing. Ilse found them in the reed house, their oars stacked in a corner, each one sitting as far from the other as the walls allowed. She set down the tea. The left ferryman lifted his head, looked at the cup, then at the right ferryman, then at the cup again, as though it were a sum he could not quite finish.

When she came back on Monday the canal was white and still. The two of them had walked out across it to the middle, where the ice was thickest, and they stood there shoulder to shoulder with their arms wrapped round each other, two lines of ink, faint as breath on glass. Ilse picked up the cold tea and drank it herself, and the ice did not crack.
