Smiley and masked face tattoos on fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised toward the camera with a black and grey tattoo on one finger showing a smiley face, with one hand over the mouth area. A second finger carries a dark masked figure in a balaclava style, with a rounded head and simple shading. The linework is bold and cartoonish, with flat black ink and light grey tones, set against an orange wall, a framed print and an orange chair.

Dear Mr Pilling,

Your tickets for the 6.42 to Carlisle have been held at the desk since Tuesday, along with the other things that train has left behind. I will not pretend the matter is simple. Ronnie Dace came in on Wednesday with a parcel of stolen pork pies and a grievance against a man called Smiley, who he says owes him a fiver and a copy of the timetable. Smiley is not a man. Smiley is a face drawn in ink on a forefinger, and he has never once paid a debt in his life.

Dace's other finger, the one in the balaclava, was the lookout. Between them they had planned to lift the wallet of a commercial traveller dozing under the departures board. I have watched the camera footage three times. The masked finger gave the signal by tapping the knuckle of the thumb, and then the smiling one went for the wallet and, at the last moment, clapped a hand over its own grin, as if to keep it from getting out. That is the part I keep thinking about. Thieves are supposed to be serious.

The wallet is in my drawer. The traveller has not come back for it, and I suspect he is now somewhere past Preston, wondering who in Carlisle was kind enough to leave his tickets on the bench.

Yours faithfully, Margaret Ibbotson Lost Property, Platform Two
