Game Over lettering across knuckles
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists are shown close up, with the word GAME OVER tattooed in block capitals across the knuckles, one letter per knuckle. Small cross marks sit above the letters on the upper finger joints. The linework is clean and the lettering is shaded in black and grey, set against a softly blurred dark grey jumper and background.

Dear Tom, the pass is still shut, so you will have to take my word for everything that has happened since Tuesday. The snow came over the ridge like a lid dropped on a pan, and the Crowned Ram has eleven of us now, counting the drover and his two dogs who have claimed the hearth as their own.

Last night Mrs Pask dug out the old tin of dominoes and the dice cup with the chipped rim, and we played for matchsticks because the coppers had run out. I was winning until the drover's girl, who is nine and terrifying, took my last six sticks on a double six. She marked each lost stick with a small cross on the table beside my name, the way the penny machines in Scarborough used to flash when a man was finished. Game over, she said, and went up to bed.
I think of that often now. Clenched hands are a poor thing to spend on a game, but I have seen men hold their fists up over a lost wager as if they were the last lines of a broadside. I did nothing of the kind. I simply pushed back the bench, carried the lamp to the window, and watched the snow bury the post, the lane and the painted sign of the Ram.
This morning the sky cleared thin and blue, and the girl was first at the door with her boots on the wrong feet. She had kept the score in chalk on the back of the cupboard. My name had a row of crosses beside it. Hers had none. I have decided to call that fair, and I am writing this with the last of the ink to say I will bring you a new set of dice when the road opens.
