Ganesha with om symbol and mouse on a thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black figure of the seated deity Ganesha with four arms and an elephant head fills most of the frame, with an om symbol at the upper right and a small mouse below the figure. The design is built from filled black shapes with fine white negative lines separating the limbs, jewellery and folds of the body. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of healed skin with no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wheel went down to its hub just past the dry well, and Dhanraj climbed out to look at it with the patience of a man who had already counted his water. The road ran eleven miles without a tree. Behind him the sun sat on the dunes like a coin pressed into wax. He worked a bent iron bar under the axle and it gave him nothing but blisters.

Something tugged at his shoe. He looked down at a mouse, grey as the sand, sitting upright with its paws folded as though it were waiting for a bus. It had a way of looking at him that made him feel late. He said, "I have no crumbs." The mouse walked to the rut, sat beside it, and began to dig with its small hands, scooping sand out behind it in quick, neat handfuls. Dhanraj laughed until he coughed, then he dug too.

They worked until the light went orange. When the wheel finally lifted, the mouse climbed onto the cart rail, turned its back on the road ahead, and waited. Dhanraj told it the next village had a shrine with a cracked bell and a pot of sweet rice nobody ever ate. The mouse seemed to think this a fine plan. He wrapped his last chapati in a cloth and set it on the rail beside the mouse.

The well-keepers still tell how a carter reached the crossroads with his load untouched and a grey mouse riding the hub like a passenger. He cleared the sand from the road before his bullocks ever set hoof on it, and he never once had a cart stopped by what lay in front of it.
