Garbage Pail Kids style character on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon figure with spiky brown hair, rosy cheeks and one arm raised stands in a yellow and blue striped bikini, with a small heart motif near the waist. A green and yellow banner at the top displays the words Garbage Pail Kids in blue lettering. The lines are bold and outlined, with soft shading and bright, mostly flat colour fills across the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pendle's ice cream van was the only thing on Sunderly Front that had ever beaten Dean Ochs at swap day, and it did it with a card nobody had seen before: a gigantic woman in a striped bikini, one arm raised, grinning as if she had just won the pier and the lottery with it. Dean wanted her badly. He offered his Gross Gary, two Stinky Sams and the last of his conker collection. Mrs Pendle shook her head so hard her perm bounced.

"Not for sale, love. She's the Sunderly Sweetheart. Only one in the set."

The trouble was the heart. Every card had a small stamp in the corner, but this one had a heart that looked as though someone had pinched it shut with a clothes peg. Dean spent the whole half-term trying to work out what it meant. He asked the lifeguard, a gull in the bin and his gran, who said it meant the card had been sat on by a seagull and should be thrown away.

On the last Saturday of the holidays he went back with a hundred pence in a sweaty fist and a question ready. Mrs Pendle laughed until flour came out of her nose. "It's not a heart, Dean. It's a sticker for anyone who comes back for the next one." He paid, walked out with the Sweetheart tucked inside his jumper, and behind him she was already pegging a fresh heart shut on the next card.
