Cartoon undersea scene across a back

Back · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers much of the back, showing an underwater scene with a grinning cartoon shark at the centre, a seahorse, a sea turtle, a pink starfish, a small jellyfish-like creature and a scuba diver near the top. Coral and pink jellyfish fill the surrounding blue-green water. The bold outlines and shading give the cartoon creatures a smooth, rounded look.

The reef committee met in the rusted belly of the Mary Ellen, the only room in the bay with a ceiling, and Bartholomew Finch was told for the third time that month to stop smiling. He had tried. He had practised a frown in the kelp until his jaw ached, and Ottilie the seahorse had coached him with a face so mournful that a passing sea cucumber wept. Every time the sea turtle Wilfred read the minutes aloud, Bartholomew's teeth came out again, long and white and entirely pleased with themselves.

"It's the teeth," said Norma the starfish, who sat on the committee's only chair and did not need it. "Nobody would mind a shark with ordinary teeth." Bartholomew said that his teeth were the teeth his mother had given him and he had never once asked for a different set. The jellyfish, who had been drifting through the meeting and listening with interest, agreed loudly and then stung nobody, which was the most anyone had expected from them.

The matter was settled at half past eleven, when a diver came down through the green light in a cloud of silver bubbles. He turned slowly in his fins, pointed at the coral, and gave a thumbs-up to the whole bay. Bartholomew forgot every instruction he had ever been given and grinned so wide that a shoal of mackerel fled into the staghorn coral in a panic.

Wilfred looked at Ottilie. Ottilie looked at Norma. "There," said the turtle, "that's the face they come down for every Tuesday." The diver gave another thumbs-up, the committee voted without a single dissent, and the minutes were corrected to read that the shark would keep his teeth, and the reef would keep its nerve.
