Gemini symbol with nautical stars
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The design centres on a bold black Gemini zodiac symbol with a rectangular cut-out in the middle. Several green nautical stars with black outlines and shading cluster around it, with smaller black stars scattered across the upper and lower left. The artwork is a flat illustration on a plain white background, with bold outlines and simple solid fills.

By twenty to five the flour has settled on your forearms like a second skin, and the shop window still holds nothing but black. You slide the second tray of bloomers onto the rack and count the stars through the glass, the way your mother taught you on the harbour wall. Four of them prick the sky above the chimney opposite. The fifth is the one you watch for, low over the water, the one that always means the tide has turned.

Your brother was meant to be here at half four. He went to sea and you stayed with the ovens, and for eleven years you have agreed on that much, if nothing else. The bell goes. Ferris stands on the mat with salt in his beard and a paper bag clutched to his chest like a stolen cat. "Brought you the chart," he says, and unrolls it across the counter, pinning the corners with two cooling loaves. Someone has inked a compass rose in the margin and labelled it in your mother's hand, in the same careless slope as your own.
He asks whether you ever miss it, the open water, the nights with nothing but a lamp and a bearing. You tell him the bread rises whether you are watching or not, and that is the trouble with bread, and with brothers. He taps the rose and says you have marked the wrong star. You don't argue. You take the knife, score the last loaf in two long lines that cross at the middle, and slide it into the oven.
By the time the sun lifts over the cliffs, the shop smells of crust and salt, and the window shows two reflections where there should be one. Both of you are bent over the same chart with flour on your faces, both pointing at the same small hard light still hanging above the water, refusing to go out.
