Geometric arrow tattoo on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black line runs diagonally across the skin, with three open triangular shapes along it forming arrowheads, and small dots near the ends. The linework is fine and even, with some triangles partly filled and others outlined. The image is a close, slightly soft photo against a pale, warm-toned skin background.

Sit down, the bread's not ready and you'll only get under my feet. Right. Three arrows, every one pointing the same way, which is the first thing you should know about the Marisol's navigator. He wouldn't let a line cross itself. Said a crossed line was a lie told by a clumsy hand.

He drew his charts on triangles, mind. Every headland, every shoal, every bell buoy got its own little open triangle, and the triangles were never filled in until he was sure. Half-filled, he called them. Doubtful. The mate asked him once why he didn't just shade the lot and be done, and he said a sea that was certain was a sea that would drown you.
The winter the ice came down off the Dogger, we lost our reckoning. Three nights of fog, no stars, the log line tangled round the capstan. Everyone wanted the captain to turn back. The navigator just kept sketching on the backs of the flour sacks, the same thin line running off to the north-east, and at the end of it three arrowheads, outlined only.
On the fourth morning the fog thinned and there was the light at Scarrow Point, exactly where the third triangle sat. He'd put a dot beside it, small as a crumb, for a rock nobody else had marked. We cleared it by a cable's length at the turn of the tide, and the captain never asked him for a chart again. Eat your heel of bread. The dot's the bit they always forget.
