Outlined triangle on the inner wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outlined tattoo of a triangle with a pointed tail sits on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The linework is even and solid with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The arm rests against a dark, glossy leather surface, with a studded leather bracelet and a thin elastic band on the wrist.

Dear Nell,

The chart room smelt of paraffin and wet wool again this morning, and Mr Abbott has finally let me hold the pen. You will laugh, because my hand still shakes on the long lines, but he says the shoal marks want a steady nerve more than a steady hand. So I have been going over the Pell Bank with his old black ink, drawing the little warning triangles where the sand shifts each winter and the fishing boats go down on it.

Each one is an outline only, never filled. Mr Abbott says a filled mark means the danger is gone, and nobody in Cawsand has ever trusted a sea that tidy. The tail on each one points the way a boat should come in, down the channel past the ruined groyne, toward the slipway where the lamp is kept lit. I asked him why a tail and not a plain point, and he just tapped the chart and said the water does not read arrows, but men do, and men in a hurry will follow a tail.

Last Tuesday the Verity came in on the flood with her sails half down and her skipper white as a sheet, and he said the triangles had saved his keel. He did not say thank you to me. He asked whose hand had drawn the one by the groyne, because it sat a fraction truer than the rest. I told him it was mine, and he nodded as though he had known all along.

I have started signing them now, very small, under the tail. Come home at Easter and I will show you. The bank has moved again since I last looked, and there is a new one forming off the point that I have not yet outlined. I am waiting for the tide to show me where.

Love, Dell
