Small outline bird on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single bird in flight is drawn as a simple black outline on the outer ankle. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the bird occupies only a small area in the centre of the frame. The skin is pale and the plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The crate is lighter than it should be, and Mr Pryce has already gone down the slipway ahead of you, his boots loud on the wet weed. You set the crate on the sea wall and lift the latch the way he showed you, two fingers, no hurry. The first grey bird steps onto your palm, studies the water, then drops off your hand as if the air were a staircase it has always known by heart.

You count them out. Eleven, twelve. Each one clears the breakwater and bends west toward the loft on Carrick Hill, shrinking to a dot, then a pencil stroke, then nothing. The gulls take no notice. Past the lighthouse the trawlers are coming in with their nets hung over the rails, and the whole town smells of diesel and bait and the bread Mrs Ahern fries at the café before six.
The last bird will not go. It sits on the iron bollard, puffing out its feathers, watching you as though you owe it an explanation. You point west and say the way home out loud, which is foolish, because it has never once needed telling. Mr Pryce calls up from the slipway that she's a stayer and you'll be waiting till Tuesday, so you turn your back on it and start down the steps.
When you look again, it is above the boats, a small dark mark against a sky the colour of wet slate. It banks once over the harbour mouth, and for a moment you could close it out with your thumb, then it tips its wings and is gone over the water.
