Fine line mountain range on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a row of three mountain peaks drawn in thin black linework, with a few short hatch strokes on the lower slopes. It sits on the forearm beside a rolled-up denim sleeve, and the skin and ink are shown against a plain light background. The design is small and uncoloured, with the outline and shading kept simple and clean.

On deck the air was so cold it hurt her teeth. Three peaks stood out of the grey like something drawn with a fine nib, the middle one taller and leaning a little, the lower slopes scored with short hard strokes where the snow had not yet settled. Her father had drawn them for her on the back of a ferry timetable when she was seven, pressing so hard the biro tore the paper, and he told her a mountain only stays a mountain if you refuse to draw it soft.

She stayed at the rail longer than the stew allowed. The hatch clanged twice behind her, the mate calling for the bread, and the first ferry horn answered from up the fjord. When she finally went back down, the water had boiled dry at the bottom of the pot and the potatoes were cold, but she took the timetable from her apron pocket, smoothed out the crease, and wrote beneath her father's peaks in square capitals: SERVE AT NINE. TELL HIM WE SAW THEM.
