Geometric arrow tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with blonde hair is seen from behind, showing a black tattoo of a vertical arrow-like motif on the centre of her upper back. The design combines a solid triangular arrowhead, a crescent shape, small dotted circles, a fletched tail and scattered dots, all drawn in clean solid black lines and shapes. The image has a soft, neutral background and a white lace top framing the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been fletching for the Halloran sisters since the spring the bore dried up, and by August her fingers knew goose feather better than her own name. Every dawn she pedalled the day's quivers out along the desert road, past the water tower with its flaking letters and the cattle grid that rattled her teeth, to the range where the sisters shot at tin cans and at the rising sun. The chain on the bicycle had gone gritty. She had stopped minding.

The arrows came back to her in a state. Most were snapped at the nock. Tobias, the youngest Halloran, had taken to marking each shaft before it went out, a dot for every shot, a crescent scratched beneath the fletching where the bow had bitten. He liked the look of it, he said, the way a moon sits on a point. Ruth thought it was nonsense until the morning he handed her a shaft with a dotted ring cut into the wood like a coin pressed into clay, and told her that was the one that had got away.

She found it herself the following week, a half mile past the grid, lying in the red sand where the road bent and nobody had any business stopping. The shaft was whole. The ring was there, the dots were there, and the crescent had been cut so deep a thumb could fit in it. She turned it over in the heat until the shadow of the water tower slid across her knuckles, then slid the arrow into the quiver with the others and pedalled on, counting the dots under her breath, one more than she had last time.
