Music staff garter tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a band of five-line staves with musical notes wrapped around the thigh like a garter, with a bow tied at the front. The linework is thin and even, and the ink appears in a blue-grey or black tone with no shading. The image is framed close to the thigh, with a hand resting on a floral skirt at the top.

The copying book had gone soft at the corners by the time Aunt Ida let me take it into the beech wood, and I carried it the way she carried the church key, inside my coat against my ribs. Every morning before the bread van, I sat on the stile where the trees stop and wrote down whatever the wood was singing.

Nobody in Hollin Mere believed the birds had a tune. They had calls, Ida said, and a call was not a song. But the wren at the top of the old oak went up in three clean steps and down again, and the robin answered a fifth lower, and I drew them out on five lines the way Mr Carrow taught us at the schoolroom, each note as small as a seed.

In October the chapel bell rope snapped and the ringers gave up. On the morning it went quiet I found the wren's tune on the track, not sung but laid out, pebbles picked up and set into a staff, notes hung on the brambles like washing. I tied the linen strip from my sleeve round the stile post, wrote the last bar onto it in ink from my own finger, and the wood took the tune up.

By the first frost the whole village was humming it, hedge to hedge, and nobody asked where it had come from. I still keep the book. The ribbon is knotted at the front where I left it, and when the wind goes through the beeches I can hear which bar is missing.
