Geometric shapes on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a vertical arrangement of overlapping circles, a triangle, a small hexagon and arrow-like marks, linked by long thin lines and small dots. The linework is fine and even, with the dots adding a delicate accent along the lines. It is done in black ink only on pale skin, set against a softly blurred indoor background, with the design centred on the lower leg.

Above it the two brass sighting rings turned on their pins, one wide, one narrow, and between them she could see the chalk mark she had scratched on the rope at fourteen feet.

Her brother Tom stood at the lip of the shaft with the lamp and said nothing, which was how she knew he was frightened. The water had gone down two inches since Lady Day. Somewhere below, the old Roman channel was supposed to run clean, and the village had been drinking from a cart for a month.

She let the cord run. Every knot she passed, she counted aloud, and every count he wrote on the back of a seed packet with a stub of pencil. Thirty-one. Thirty-two. At forty-four the bob touched something that was not stone, and the line went slack with a soft sound like a sigh.

Tom held the lamp over the dark. Neither of them spoke. Then the water far below answered with a single bright drip, and Ada laughed and tied off the rope at the surface, marking the place where the true depth began.
