Forty-one trees on the Hollow Bank plot, and the ledger says forty. I counted twice with a stub of chalk between my teeth, which is how my father always counted, and the twenty-third trunk had no mark on it at all. Just grey bark, a crack down one side, and a wasp nest the size of a fist hanging from the lowest branch.

Grandfather Ezra painted the orchard's marks himself, in red ochre mixed with linseed. An open triangle meant sound fruit, a solid one meant windfall, and an arrow showed which way the sun had been when the tree went in. The arrows all pointed west, toward the ridge the map calls the Three Sisters, though from the lane you can only see two of them. I had always thought the code was a bit of a show for the visitors.

I followed the arrow painted on the old gate post, past the twenty-third tree, to a waist-high stone at the edge of the wall. Someone had cut a pair of overlapping diamonds into its face and a single line beneath them, level as a spirit bubble. I knelt in the wet grass, pulled back the moss, and found a biscuit tin with its lid rusted shut. Inside were nine letters, all addressed to a Ruth Callow at a farm I have never heard of, none of them stamped.

I did not post them. I took the ochre from my bag, painted a small open triangle on the twenty-third trunk pointing up at the ridge, and wrote forty-one in the ledger. The wasps could have the windfall.
