The groom had lost his north on the morning of the wedding, and by noon half the valley knew it. His mother had hidden the brass compass in the bread oven to keep it from the children, nobody could find it again, and the priest was waiting at the lych gate with his book open at the wrong page.

Old Mab Gillow, who had sewn the bride's dress and buried two husbands, came up the lane slowly, stopping at every gate. She carried only a slate and a stub of chalk. 'You don't need brass,' she told him. 'Stand where the sun is and look for the mountain with the notch in its shoulder, the one your father climbed the year before you were born. The trees lean away from the wind, so the wind comes from the water side. The moon has been up since dawn, which means the night is behind you.'

He stood in the middle of the field with his arms out, the way the children did when they played at being lost. The sun sat square above the church tower. He turned until the notched peak sat at his left shoulder and the clouds were rolling in from the water, and the bride, who had been watching from the stile, laughed out loud and began to walk toward him through the wet grass.

They never carried a compass after that. When the grandchildren asked how their grandfather had found the road from the church to the sea that afternoon, he took Mab's slate down from the hook in the hall and showed them the chalk marks still on it: a sun, a notched peak, a crescent moon, and a line running down to the water with a small arrow at the end.
