Geometric blackwork bands on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman rests her hand under her chin, showing a forearm covered in bold black bands of triangles, hatched panels and dotted line work. The linework is solid black with no colour, and the bands wrap around the arm in a repeating geometric arrangement. Blonde dreadlocks fall across the frame, and the close crop keeps the focus on the arm.

The theodolite had been sulking since Tuesday, so Aunt Win sent me up the cliff with the chain, a tin of lamp black and strict instructions to keep the sheep off the survey pegs. From the top you could see the whole coast laid out like a sleeve of folded paper: the harbour wall, the triangle of the chapel roof, and the three dark gaps where the tide ran into the old quarry.

She had taught me to make the marks the way the surveyors made theirs, one station at a time. You set a point, drop a dot for the sight line, fill the triangle that falls between two bearings, then hatch the shadow beside it so the eye knows which way the land tips. Win never let me rush. A band that measures a place has to close on itself, she said, or it lies, and every lie stays in the stone for a hundred years.

On the fourth afternoon the wind dropped and the chain went slack in my hands. I counted my pegs against the ledger and found one more than I had driven in. It stood at the lip of the quarry where nothing should be, a grey stake with a dot burned into its crown. When I pulled it free, the hole beneath was already full of still water and small, neat triangles of light.

Win pinned the stake to the wall beside the chart and said the sea had sent a correction. When the tide turned I walked the cliff again, and every line I had ruled was meeting exactly where it should.
