Mountain in a circle on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a small circular design on the outer forearm, showing a peaked mountain with horizontal lines suggesting water or cloud below it. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots, especially within the circle. The ink is a dark blue-black with no other colours, and the photo is framed from the upper arm to the thigh against a plain wall.

The snow came over the col before the lamps were lit, and by the time the last cart had been turned back at the bridge, you were the only one left to bolt the front door. Mr Hollis, who had kept the Stillwater Inn for forty years, had gone up to bed with his boots still on, complaining that the mountain had never once asked his permission for anything.

The guest arrived at midnight, knocking with a gloved fist. She carried a flat leather case under one arm and a map so old its creases had gone soft as cloth. She asked for the room with the round window, the one that looked straight at Carrick Peak, and you took her up the stairs with a candle guttering in your hand. Inside, she unrolled the map across the bed and tapped a spot where someone had drawn a small peak inside a ring of dots. "Every winter it shifts a little," she said. "Someone has to write down where."

You stayed up with her until the candle was a stub. She showed you how to stipple, tapping a needle-fine pen so that the shadow built from thousands of points rather than a single line, so the mountain seemed to breathe frost. Below the peak she drew three wavering lines for the cloud that always sat on the shoulder of the col. By dawn the window had frosted over, and the only clear patch was the circle the sun was leaving on the glass.

When the road opened three days later, the guest was gone and the map was gone with her, but on the windowpane someone had pressed a ring of breath and frost, and inside it a peak, dotted in with a fingertip. You left it there. Mr Hollis never washed that pane, and every winter after, you checked whether the mountain had moved.
