Geometric cat head on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric cat head faces forward, built from straight black lines that divide the face into angular facets, with solid black eyes and a triangular nose. A small dotted triangle sits above and below the head, framing it. The thin, even linework is shown in black ink on pale skin, with the tattoo centred in the frame and a thin strap crossing the left side.

Sit down where the wind can't get at you, and I'll tell you about the cat that measured the road. Forty miles out from Tonopah, my father said, a surveyor named Halder came through with a theodolite and a mule that refused to cross the dry lake. He pitched his tent by a single fence post and began to sight the mountains, because surveyors cannot leave a thing unmeasured. Every night he drew his lines in a ledger, and every night a grey cat sat on the post watching him do it.

The cat had a face made of straight lines, Halder swore. Where its cheeks should have been, a slant of pencil ran from ear to whisker, and the eyes were two black stones that did not blink. Halder tried to shoo it. The cat only turned its triangle head and looked at the place where his third peak should have been, as though it had already marked it. By the fourth night he understood the cat was doing the same sums he was, only faster, and that it had been out here a good deal longer.
What happened to Halder I will not pretend to know. The ledger was found in the spring, open at a page of dotted triangles, one pointing up at the sky and one pointing down at the sand. The mule came home alone. But if you drive that road after dark and the moon sits just so over the dry lake, you will see a little grey shape on the fence post, and you will feel, quite distinctly, that somebody has taken your measure.
