Geometric cat head on the side ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric cat head is drawn in single-weight black lines across the side of the torso. The linework divides the face into angular triangular facets, with the ears, eyes and muzzle formed by straight intersecting strokes. The tattoo is black ink on skin, shown in a close, slightly angled photo with a grey shirt pulled up at the edge of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the band's having its tea and you'll hear me better with your feet still. You want to know why old Mrs Pell never once took to the floor for a quickstep? Lean in close, because this hall has ears in its rafters and every one of them gossips.

Her father drew for the Calder Mill in Halifax, and he could draw a bridge truss blind but never a curve. Every line he made was straight and every join was a point. Then the mill got a grey tom called Sextant, who slept on the warm boilers and would not come down for the foreman, the cleaners, or the Queen herself. Each night her father sat with his pencil trying to get that cat down on paper, and each night it came out as a heap of angles. Ada said he finally got it right the evening he gave up on a soft cat and drew a cat made of triangles instead, because a cat, if you look at it squarely, is only a few clever triangles pretending to be soft.
The night the mill closed for good, Sextant walked out through the loading doors and never came back. Her father drew him one last time on the back of a wage slip, all facets and sharp lines, and pinned it above the stove. Ada carried it with her when she married, and she brought it to every dance in this hall, folded inside her glove.
So when the band strikes up and you see her counting under her breath, one two three, stepping only along the edges and never on the points, don't laugh. She's not dancing badly. She's keeping the cat's nose clear of her feet, the way her father would have wanted. Now the band's back, so go on, the floor's waiting.
