Cat in a striped jumper on shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo shows a tan cat standing upright with its tail curling out to the left, wearing a grey and black striped jumper. The linework is thin and the fur is softly shaded in brown and grey. The tattoo sits on the back of the shoulder against plain skin, with a dark garment covering the rest of the frame.

The lift at Harrow Court had been broken since March, so the cat took the stairs, all eleven flights, every morning before the milk float came round. Nobody owned her. She belonged to the block the way damp did. Old Mrs Dacey on the fourth floor had knitted her a jumper from the grey and black wool left over from her late husband's scarf, because the stairwell wind got into the cat's ribs, and a cat with cold ribs was no use to anyone.

The cat wore it up and down. She sat on the balcony ledges and watched the estate. She knew which boy had the bike with no seat, which van came for the bins on Tuesdays, and that the girl on the seventh floor cried in the bathroom with the fan running so no one would hear. She knew that Sami from the ground floor had a red kite his grandad had made, and that it had caught on the roof of the bin store the Sunday before, and that he had been too frightened of the drainpipe to climb after it.
On the Thursday the wind dropped and the cat went up the drainpipe in her striped jumper, which snagged once and was freed, and came back down with the string wound round her front paw. Sami took it from her gently and said thank you in the voice people use for things that cannot answer. Mrs Dacey mended the jumper that night with the last of the wool and said the cat had earned a new one, though she never knitted it.
The cat sat on the eleventh-floor ledge after that, tail curled out to the left, looking down at the car park and the kite and the lit windows, keeping count of everyone.
