Geometric circle and face fragment on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two angled photographs show a black and grey tattoo on the upper arm near the elbow. A grey circle and a diamond-shaped panel overlap, with a thin black diagonal line cutting across them, and the shaded close-up of an eye and nose fills the shapes. The soft greyscale shading and smooth gradients give the face fragment a realistic finish against the plain skin.

The third crate had come up from the cellar with the wrong face in it, and Hester Lowe spent the first hour of the night deciding whether to tell anyone.

The bust was plaster, a woman of about thirty with her hair pulled back, cast from life in a Bristol studio before the war and boxed when the studio closed. Someone had packed it in newspaper from 1911. Lowe had cleaned it, filled its chipped nose and rebuilt the left ear, and it had been ready for the gallery plinth for a week. What she hadn't noticed was a fragment wedged under the base: a sliver of cheek and one closed eye, paler than the rest and glazed with a lacquer she didn't recognise.
She worked under the lamp with a jeweller's loupe, turning the piece until its edges caught the light. The break ran at an angle, neat as a ruled line. Where it met the bust's cheekbone the plaster matched in grain but not in age. Someone had cut the shape from another cast, a diamond-shaped panel, then sealed it under a circle of grey wax so the two halves would read as one from across a room.
At four in the morning she rang the night porter, then didn't mention the fragment at all. She sat with it instead, pressing its edge against the bust until it clicked, and the sealed eye lined up with the open one as if it had been waiting. Then she took the knife to the old wax and lifted it away. The sharp diagonal seam stayed where it was. She mounted the piece at nine with the line left showing, a fine dark stroke cutting clean across the cheek.
