Pink brushstroke and rings on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the lower leg with loose, abstract shapes: broad pink brushstrokes, a few thin black lines and dots, and several hollow ochre-yellow rings. The strokes have soft, uneven edges and the ink looks layered, giving a painted feel. The design runs diagonally up the leg, with the pink shapes dominating the upper part and the rings clustered lower down against the skin tone.

Nobody at the reunion could say who had painted the pink stroke across the hall wall, only that it had been there since the year the mill shut. Old Mrs Hebden said it was a painter called Lumb who came up the valley with one brush and a tin of madder, and asked for nothing but a bed in the chapel loft.

He painted through one winter. Each morning he went down to the beck and came back with his boots full of ochre mud, and each evening he pressed rings of it onto whatever the children had left out: slate, bread crusts, the lids of the tin baths. The village thought him soft. The schoolmaster thought him a thief, because rings kept going missing from the church plate. Lumb said he was only counting what people had let go of.
On the last night of February the stroke was finished and he was gone. Someone found a black line running from the wall to the door, with dots set along it like stepping stones, and a note wedged in the rafters that said only: mind the rings when you leave.
At the reunion they stood under the wall with their paper cups, and Tom Askew, who had been the worst boy in the class, took a ring off the trestle and slid it onto his finger. Nobody stopped him. The pink was still wet at the edges, or so everyone agreed.
