Small shaded triangle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined triangle sits on the forearm of a pale arm, photographed against a plain white background. The linework is thin and precise, and the right-hand side of the triangle is filled with soft grey dotwork shading that fades towards the edges. The black and grey design is placed off-centre, leaving generous negative space around it.

The flour has got into the seams of your hands again by ten to four, and the delivery van is already idling outside with its headlights on the shutter. You pull the first tray of tins from the rack. Nobody else in Pelham Street is awake except the bakery's old grey cat and the radio on the windowsill, murmuring the shipping forecast in the voice that always sounds like it is apologising.

The dough you left overnight has risen past the lip of its bowl, a slow pale dome like something breathing under a cloth. You knock the air out of it with the heel of your palm and it sighs. Your mother taught you to shape a bloomer by feel, and to cut a single slash across the top before it goes in, because otherwise the crust splits wherever it pleases. You cut one neat line, then a second at an angle, so the two meet in a small sharp point.
When the oven door opens, heat rolls across the floor and up the wall, and the light from the little vent window falls in a wedge on the tiles, brighter on one side than the other and fading to nothing at the edges. You stand in it longer than you should. The van driver knocks twice on the glass and you lift a hand without turning round.
By six the loaves are cooling on the racks in a row, and the wedge of light has crept up the far wall and gone thin as the first grey in the sky. You write the day's order on the chalk board: three cobs, two rye, one for the church hall. Then, under the list, very small, you draw the thing you have been trying to get right all week, a triangle with its shadowed side turned towards the window.
