Geometric crystal on an inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined geometric crystal or faceted gem sits on the inner forearm of a person wearing a dark sleeve. The linework is thin and single-needle style, with the facets drawn as open triangles and planes. The image is black and white, and the clean white background keeps focus on the tattoo and the skin texture.

The stone is wrapped in a handkerchief inside a tin of boot polish, and the woman at the Veleno crossing has already decided you won't find it. You unfold the cloth on the steel counter under the strip light. Six faces, drawn by a hand that doesn't believe in shading: open triangles, planes that stop exactly where they should. Your supervisor calls it glass. You call it a drawing, because nobody drops a crystal that clean.

The papers say Ilse Marrow, surveyor, bound for Hallen with instruments. The instruments are in the case, rulers and a brass theodolite with a cracked lens. You turn the stone over. On its underside someone has scratched a set of coordinates, the same ones you were taught in training as the meridian the border was meant to follow, a line nobody ever walked.

You ring the duty desk. Nobody answers. You hold the stone to the window, and the light splits into thin lines across the tiles, the same lines the surveyor must have spent years counting. Forty minutes pass. You let the queue behind her move on, then do the one thing the manual forbids: you copy the coordinates in biro on the back of your hand.

At dawn the stone goes back into its handkerchief and into her palm, and you stamp the form Clear. By the afternoon the ink has rubbed to nothing, but the line on the map is still exactly where you left it.
