Geometric fox on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small geometric fox is drawn in a single black outline, with its head and body built from angular, faceted lines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits in the middle of a pale, close-cropped photo of the ankle and lower leg. The image is in black and white.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been folding the same fox for three winters when the surveyor climbed up to the pass with his ledger and asked her to draw him something he could trust. The sheet was grey cartridge paper and she was not allowed to cut it. Her grandfather had taught her that a fox made with scissors was a lie told to a child, and a line you could not account for was worse.

The surveyor wanted the crossing marked: where the snow lay longest, where the ice gave under a mule, where the wind came through the rocks like a blade. Marta pressed each crease with her thumbnail and talked while she worked. The head first, a sharp triangle with ears like shut doors. Then the body, folded back on itself so the tail could curl round the feet. "A fox is only a set of decisions," she said. "Every edge is a choice about where the ground will hold."

He carried it down the pass inside his coat. In April the thaw took the lower road and a carter found the paper pinned under a stone at the bridge, its folds still sound. He followed the angles the way a fox follows a scent, testing each turn of the path against the paper, and he came out at the valley inn with his boots wet and his mule alive.

The fox still sits on the sill of that inn, its single unbroken line running from nose to tail. Nobody has ever managed to unfold it without tearing it.
