Crescent moon and sun on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the fingers curled, showing a small crescent moon beside a sun with rays on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the tattoo sits small against the skin. The image is black and white, with a plain pale background that keeps the focus on the hand.

Dear Nell,

You will think I have finally lost my wits, but I have made a decision about the Pavilion's ballroom floor. Mr Hollis has let me sweep it after closing, and last Thursday I found a dance card someone had dropped under the bench, a little card with the names of the eight dances written in purple pencil. On the back somebody had drawn a crescent moon and a sun with rays, neatly, as if they had been practising. I have been wondering since who keeps two such signs on one card.

The band from Grimsby plays until the lamps are dimmed and the last pair leaves by the side door, and I stay on with my brush and bucket. Every night the moon rides low over the harbour wall while the sun is nowhere to be seen, and I think of the two of them passing each other like couples on the floor, always turning, never once in the same hold. Mrs Crane at the cloakroom says that is nonsense and I should go home to bed. I tell her I am waiting to see which one the floor belongs to.

Last night I found a second card in the same hand, a sun drawn beside a moon, and this time the moon was smaller and rubbed faint, as though someone had kept changing their mind about which of them to put first. I stood there with the wet mop and laughed out loud, alone in that great empty room. Then I took my own pencil, drew one small sun in the corner, and left the card on the bench for whoever comes back for it.

Yours, with ink on my thumbs, Ida
