Geometric cube butterfly on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A butterfly silhouette is filled with a pattern of isometric cubes in pink, blue, green, yellow and orange. The cubes are cleanly outlined and shaded to suggest depth, and the wings spread across the forearm against a plain dark background. The colour is bright and evenly distributed across the design.

The rain had been coming sideways down Tanner Row since the bells, and Ada Pell was still stacking her father's dye blocks under the canvas when the stranger stopped at the stall. He wore a coat too thin for October and asked for a colour that had no name.

Her father would have sent him off. Ada was not her father. She built him a wall of blocks instead, pink folded against blue, green rising into yellow, each cube turned on its corner so the stack seemed to lift off the trestle. "That is a window, not a colour," the man said. "Look at the edges," she told him. Every cube had three faces, and the eye could never settle which was lit and which was in shadow, so the wall kept changing as he watched.
He stood there until the rain thinned to drizzle and the lamps came on along the row. Then he counted out coins older than the market itself and laid them on the wet wood. Ada took nothing for them. She lifted the top cube, the pink one, and set it in his palm.
Some say the butterfly that rose from the stall that night was only steam off the vats. Ada says it was the colours coming loose from their corners and finding one another, wings opening slowly over the stalls. In the morning the awning was dry, the blocks were back in their rows, and the coins had turned the green of the sky before dawn.
