UFO beaming up a unicorn over clouds

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A teal flying saucer with pink hearts and yellow dots hovers at the top left, beaming a pink starry light column downward. A unicorn with a stippled, multicoloured body leaps across the pink sky, with yellow four-pointed stars scattered around it and a rainbow arc along the bottom. Bold black outlines contrast with bright pastel fills, and teal, white-outlined clouds with sparkles sit at the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ivy Penhallow had let rooms at Seaview Lodge for thirty-one summers, and she had never before found a unicorn in the bath. It was there on Tuesday morning, or at least its shadow was, a shimmer of dotted colour on the grout that vanished when she turned the tap. Her lodger, a retired signwriter called Mr Abernethy, swore he had seen a saucer hanging over the pier at midnight, teal as a mint humbug, its rim strung with yellow lights like a fairground ride.

She did not believe him, not at first. She took up a mop and a cup of tea and found his room tidy, the window open to the sea, the air smelling of salt and sherbet. On the sill lay a sheet of tracing paper covered in pencil stars, and beneath them, in careful capitals, a note: THEY WANTED ONE PONY FOR THE NIGHT SHIFT. I GAVE THEM THE PINK ONE FROM THE CAROUSEL. BRING IT BACK BY BREAKFAST.

Ivy walked down to the prom in her cardigan. The carousel was missing a horse, a gap in the row where the brass pole stood bare and the council's notice about the stolen unicorn fluttered in the wind. Gulls wheeled above the empty space. On the sand below the railings, a striped deckchair cover had been laid out in a rainbow arc, and a line of wet footprints, far too small for a grown man, led straight into the surf.

That night she set her alarm, sat at the landing window with the lamp off, and watched a column of pink light slant down over the bay. Above the cloud banks something leapt, sparkled and was gone. In the morning the carousel had its horse back, its coat freshly stippled, and Mr Abernethy's room was empty except for the bed made tight and one yellow star stuck to the pillow. Ivy kept it in her apron pocket for the rest of the season. She never did learn whether the saucer had been polite about the loan.
