Rainbow hexagon row on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A row of overlapping hexagons runs across the inner forearm, each built from smaller triangular facets. The shading moves smoothly through red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, giving a soft gradient effect. The design sits just below a bright yellow sleeve against a pale, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ishara kept six dye vats along the canal wall, and the river carried their colours away every evening: red first, then orange, yellow, green, blue, and last of all the deep violet that the other dyers would not touch. The king's builder came down to the works one morning in a temper. He wanted a floor for the new hall, a row of tiles that would run from the great doors to the throne, every tile the same size and every colour in order.

Ishara told him it could be done, but not with square tiles and not with plain ones. A square, she said, leaves a gap at every corner, and a gap is where a king's guests trip. She pressed a disc of wet clay into six sides with her thumb, then cut each hexagon into six triangles from the centre, so that each facet could hold a half-shade of the next colour. The builder laughed until he saw how the light moved across them.

The king did not wait for the work to finish. He came with his heralds, pressed the first hexagon into the mortar himself, and called for the blue to go next. But the tiles would not sit flat in a hurry. Each one rocked on the one before it until the whole row lifted like a wave and cracked along the blue. The king stood in the dust, furious, and asked her what he had done wrong.

'You laid them as a man lays bricks,' Ishara said. 'Bees build that way. Watch.' She set the next one in a single slow turn, and the row closed over the gap like water. By the next new moon the hall floor ran out through the great doors and across the courtyard, a road of rainbow honeycomb, and the king walked it every morning and never once stepped on the seam.
