Geometric diamond pattern across the back of a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a grey fabric surface, showing a black tattoo of diamond shapes, small four-point stars and parallel lines spread over the back of the hand, fingers and thumb. The shapes are built from stippled and dotted edges with solid black infill, giving a crisp, symmetrical pattern. The ink is uniformly black on light skin, and the design is centred on the hand with the fingers fanned out.

The oven ticks as it warms, and you are already late for the first tray. The flour sack is open on the bench and the lamp over the proving drawer hums. Your aunt's wooden stamp sits beside the scales where she left it, its face carved into diamonds with a star at each corner and a row of fine lines bevelled along the edge. Nobody in the shop has asked what it is for.

You dust it, press it once into a disc of dough, and lift it away. The pattern comes up clean, every point sharp, the dots between the lines sitting where they should. Your aunt used to say a loaf stamped properly would not split in the oven, that the shapes gave the crumb somewhere to go. You never believed her, but you have not had a split since March.

Outside, the sky over the car park goes from black to the colour of weak tea. A van idles at the kerb. The first customer taps the glass and you lift a floury finger to say two minutes.

When the trays are out you stack the loaves in the window, each one marked with the same diamonds, and the light comes up behind them. A woman on the pavement stops, looks, and points at the star in the corner of the top loaf as if it were a signature. You wipe the stamp on your apron and decide that it is. Maybe that is enough.
