The sand had been singing for three days when my mother pressed the last cup of water into my hands and told me to stop counting the rings. I counted anyway. Every ridge that rose behind us was another coil of the great shell-worm, and every coil had a name in the old reckoning, though nobody on the salt flats still bothered to say them aloud. Above us the two watching eyes of the dunes stayed open, the way they always did, and my mother said they only closed for people who had already given up.

We reached the seep at the mouth of the blind canyon just before the light turned copper. It was no more than a dark drop of wet rock beneath a ledge, the size of my palm, and it had been hidden from the caravan lines for longer than either of our families had kept records. My mother knelt and dipped her fingers, then looked at me the way she looked at a bad bargain. "You take the first sip," she said. "It is yours to carry back, if you can carry it."

I did not sip. I lifted the cup and poured the water onto the rock where the drop had gathered, and I watched it run down into the crack in a thin silver line. My mother started to shout, then stopped. The eyes above us seemed to narrow, though that was surely the wind.

Coming home, we carried nothing but an empty cup and the knowledge of where the seep was, which is the only thing a water-finder is ever paid in. The trade lords would come for it in a season. By then the spiral would have turned, and the new ring would be ours to name.
