The rain has found the gap in the awning again, so you spend the first hour turning paperbacks face down on the trestle before the damp gets into their spines. Nobody browses in weather like this. The Tuesday men huddle under the gazebo by the tea urn, and the only customer before ten is a gull trying to lift a bun from the stall next door.

At half past ten a woman in a yellow mac stops at your table and asks if you have any tins with lids. You do, at the back: a biscuit tin dented on one side, its grey paint ruled into bricks that shrink as they curl toward the centre. Your father bought it at a clearance sale in Wellingborough and never opened it. She turns it over, thumbs the rust on the hinge, and says it held her husband's shirt buttons, the ones he saved off every coat he ever gave away. She offers two pounds. You tell her one is plenty.

Then she lifts the lid, and there is a folded paper pressed flat against the base, soft as cloth. She reads it standing in the rain, her lips moving over the same few lines, and you look at the kettle on the next stall rather than at her face. When she tucks the tin under her arm she says only that the middle of a spiral is the hardest bit to get to and the easiest to forget.

She walks off toward the car park, the bricks on the tin going dark with water. Later, folding the last of the paperbacks, you find one brass button wedged in the corner of the trestle, and you put it in your pocket without deciding to.
