Geometric eye and window tattoos in black and grey

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The collage shows four tattoos. Three sit on forearms and show an eye or a triangle framed by overlapping circles and dotted construction lines, while one on the upper back shows an open window framing a bare tree. The work is fine, precise linework with light stippled shading, all in black ink and grey tones against pale skin.

Sit closer, you, and mind the fire, because the wind on Carrick has teeth tonight. My grandmother told me this one, and she had it from a woman who measured the sea for a living. Her name was Morag Dunlin, and she came to the island with a brass compass and a box of drawing pins, sent by the mainland to say how far the bay had crept over the harbour wall.

She could not stand the sight of the bay, so she drew it instead. Every evening she sat at the window of the old schoolhouse and set down circles, one inside another, until the paper looked like ripples on still water. At the centre of them she put a triangle, and inside the triangle she drew an eye, because she said the sea always looks back at whoever is measuring it. The islanders thought she had gone strange. The children thought the eye was watching them.

Then one March the tide took the lower road, and Morag went out with her compass to reckon the new edge. She did not come back before dark. In the morning the schoolhouse shutters stood open, both leaves flung wide, and framed against the grey sky was the rowan that grows out of the rocks behind the school, bare as a bone, with the whole sea behind it.

We still open our shutters on the morning of the first big tide. Nobody says why. You will see the tree if you look, and you will see it true.
