Sun and crescent moon on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of two small tattoos on the inner wrists of a person wearing a grey knitted sweater, with the hands raised near the face. On the left wrist is a simple sun with a circle and short rays, and on the right wrist is a small crescent moon, both drawn in thin black linework with no visible shading. The close framing keeps the focus on the two matching tattoos, with a bracelet and rings visible nearby.

I told him the sun is your department. Down here we have strip lights and the hum of the drinks machine.

You'll remember I took your Thursday nights in March so you could see the kids' nativity, and you said I'd hate it. I didn't. Between two and four the corridor goes quiet enough to hear the clock above the lifts, and you start to notice things: the porter who sings under his breath, the physio who leaves a satsuma on the desk for whoever is awake, the way the window at the end turns from black to grey around five without anyone asking it to.
Last night a woman in side room six asked me to open the blinds before dawn so she could see the car park. I did, and we watched one delivery van crawl in with its headlights still on. She said it was the first thing she'd seen all week that looked like it had somewhere to be. I wrote that on her notes, which I'm not supposed to do, and I've kept it.
Come by on Sunday at seven and I'll make you toast before you go to bed. Bring the sun and I'll bring the moon, like always. Your loving sister, Ruth.
