The slate had eleven moons chalked along its edge when Ailsa finally let me climb the lamp room stairs alone. She had drawn them herself, a crescent for each night since the last boat stopped coming in, half-moons where the cloud had thinned, a full ring the night the gulls went quiet on the Carrick. She said the sea kept its own calendar and the lamp only kept time for it.

The lens was a great brass eye set in rings of glass, and after sunset it opened and swept the water in long silver rays. Ailsa called it the Watcher and I thought that was foolishness, right up until the fog came in thick as fleece and the Mairi's lads were still out past the reef. I sat with my hand on the crank, counting seconds between turns the way she had taught me, salt drying on my knuckles, while the dotted line of buoys went dark one by one below us.

The beam could not find them in that murk, and I said so, and Ailsa did not argue. She took the flare gun from its hook and fired it straight up into the wool, then sent rockets out over the water in a fan, the way you might scatter seed. Two bells later a small light answered from the broken water, then another, then a voice I knew calling my name across the waves. The eye had never seen anything. We had only been holding it open for them.

At dawn I fetched the slate. Ailsa had already wiped the moons away with the heel of her hand and drawn one new crescent in the corner, thin as a fingernail. "Dark nights count too," she said, and went down the stairs to put the kettle on.
