Knotwork face with a blue eye

Mixed · Flash

A stylised face is built entirely from interlaced knotwork, with a braided beard, a heavy brow band and a single round eye shaded in blue. The lines are fine and continuous, and the greys shift gradually from light at the top to darker blue-grey at the bottom of the beard. The dark background fills the rest of the frame, and the design is centred and symmetrical.

The wind off the fjord had stripped the last hay from the byre roof, and you were still picking straws from your beard when the stranger came up the path. He had one eye, grey as wet slate, and a sack that clinked when he set it down beside your hearth. He did not ask to come in. He unrolled a length of tarred cord and asked you to braid it.

You told him you were a carver, not a rope-maker. He laughed, a short dry sound, and said a carver who could cut a knot into a hall post could surely tie one that would hold a door against a bear. He would pay in blue glass, three beads the colour of the sea under ice, and he laid them on the bench one at a time as if counting out a debt.

You worked through the night with your knife and the awl your grandmother had used on sail canvas. Each strand went over the next and under the one before, until the pattern wanted a brow, and the brow wanted a nose, and the nose wanted a beard combed out like a man's on his wedding morning. When the grey light came you held the board up to the window and saw that the knots had closed around a face that was not quite your own.

The stranger was gone, and the sack with him, but the cord lay coiled on the bench. In the hollow you had left for an eye sat a single blue bead, still warm from the fire. Over the ridge, the bear had stopped its hunting, and the byre door swung shut on its own, held fast by a knot no one had tied.
