Geometric teal line design with diamond and arcs
Geometric · Colour · Flash
A symmetrical geometric emblem drawn in thin teal lines, built around a central diamond inside a circle with ornamental pointed motifs above and below. Dashed arcs, small star bursts and a fine vertical line with chevrons extend the design downwards, and a thin double border frames the whole piece. The rendering is flat and graphic on a near-black background with no shading.

The wind had gone round to the north by the time Tomas Greave got the theodolite levelled on the flat slab below Kessen Col, and the snow was lifting off the ridge in long thin ribbons. His fingers had stopped reporting an hour ago. He wrote the bearing in pencil on the back of a tally card anyway, because Mara would want the figures exact when she came up with the mules in spring, and because the sky above him was clearing in a way he did not trust.

Three rings of cloud had drawn away from the moon, and in the gap a cluster of stars showed sharp enough to cut. The innkeeper at the lower hut had told him the old drovers steered by those stars when the pass went white. Nobody living had seen the marks they cut into the rock, but Tomas had found them that morning under the rime: a diamond set inside a circle, with arcs bending around it like the rings a stone makes in still water, and a fine line falling south with chevrons along it, pointing the way down.
He cleared the chevrons with the back of his knife, following the scratches the drovers had left. Each stroke took him longer than the last. When the final point was clean he sat back against the cairn and found that the cold had gone out of his hands, or that he had stopped minding it.
Below him the valley was still dark, but the line of chevrons ran straight into it. He tucked the tally card inside his coat, stood, and took the first step down along the marks, counting them aloud so that whoever came up after him would know the number.
