Geometric faceted panel on a limb

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a large tattoo built from angular, faceted shapes that fan diagonally across the skin. Bold black outlines separate the panels, which are filled with fine hatching and soft grey shading to create depth. The design is in black and grey with a warm skin tone showing between the panels, and it fills most of the frame.

The crack ran down through the third feather like a dry riverbed, and Brother Anselm stood beneath the scaffold with his hands folded in his sleeves, as if the glass might be persuaded by patience. I told him it would not survive being lifted twice. He told me that was why he had sent for me and not the novice, who would have tried.

I worked from the ladder in the thin light of the north transept. Each feather was a fan of faceted panes, cut so that no two ran quite parallel, and the lead between them had been drawn heavy and black by a hand that knew the sun would fade everything else. The grey hatching was not paint at all but grisaille, fired onto the glass, so the shadow sat inside the pane rather than on top of it. I laid my new pieces against the old and the seams went quiet, the way a psalm goes quiet when you have sung it a thousand times.

On the twelfth panel I found a scratch I had not expected, two letters scored into the reverse of a facet with the point of a compass: R.T., and beside them a date from before my mother was born. Someone had wanted the feather to be counted. I considered whether to tell Anselm and decided he already knew, for he had never once looked at the glass from below.

When the last pane was seated, Anselm climbed down without a word and stood in the nave. The sun came round the buttress and passed through the wing, and the feathers threw their long diagonal light across the flagstones, each facet a small amber fan. He crossed himself. I left the scratched pane facing the wall, where it belonged.
