Geometric line drawing of a rose
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A single-colour line drawing of a rose made from angular, overlapping polygon petals. The petals spiral inward and the lines tighten into a small, detailed centre. The design is drawn in black outline on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The Chancellor of Veldmark wanted a rose that could be drawn without lifting the pen, and she sent for me because my father had once drawn the border of the salt roads that way. I was nineteen and had never been inside the palace. The summons arrived folded into a crane, its wings creased so hard the paper had gone the colour of weak tea.

The brief was simple to say and cruel to do. Each petal had to be a closed angle, each angle had to lean a little further toward the middle, and the spiral had to tighten until the lines had nowhere left to go. I drew for eleven nights in the Chancellor's cold gallery while she watched from the far end with a glass of something bitter. On the fourth night I tried curves and she laughed at me. Curves, she said, are for people who expect to be forgiven.
On the last night I stopped trying to make the petals beautiful and let them be exact. Each one turned the corner the one before had refused. The lines folded inward until the centre was a knot of strokes too small to hold a second thought. I pressed the nib there and held it, and the ink bled into a single black point, the only place on the sheet where the drawing did not have to go anywhere.
She carried the sheet to the window and was quiet for a long time. Then she asked me what the centre was, and I told her the truth, that it was where the pen had to stop. She rolled the drawing into a tube, paid me in silver, and sent me home on foot. My father still says I should have asked for a post in the palace. I think I asked for the only thing I could keep.
