Geometric flamingo line drawing

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A flamingo in side profile, drawn with straight black lines that divide the bird into triangular facets across the head, neck, body and wings. One leg is bent and the other stands straight down, with the beak angled sharply to the left. The image is a flat, monochrome sketch on off-white paper with no shading and open space around the subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad said a bird should be made of decisions, not feathers. He folded flamingos from the back pages of the local paper while Mum ironed, and in all the years I watched him I never once saw him cut. When he died, the shoebox of folded birds went to my sister, who put it in the loft above the Co-op on Hythe Road. That was where I found the one he had never finished.

Its bent leg and straight leg were the same as always, one tucked up like a man who has stopped to tie a lace and thought better of it. The beak was angled hard to the left, the way he held a pencil when he was about to say something he would not repeat. I eased the paper open with my thumbnail. Every crease was still there, a faint grid of pencilled valleys and mountains that I could read like a survey map.

I spent a week at the kitchen table trying to complete it. Each valley fold gave me a wing where a neck should have been. On the Sunday I gave up on folding and simply drew the lines he would have drawn, straight and black, with nothing hidden and nothing curved. The facets came out cleaner on paper than any crease of his had.

My sister rang on the Tuesday to ask what I had done with the flamingos. I told her I had found the one he never folded and finished it in ink. She said he would have hated the straight lines. I said he would have hated the bent leg more, and she laughed, and for a moment the loft smelled of him again.
